Troubleshooting
Diagnose crashes, roll back changes, and get back to a working game.
Start with the doctor
cpmm doctor
The doctor checks for the usual causes of crashes and stutter: unresolved redscript imports (which fail the whole script compile), duplicate installs (including a mod installed through both mod.io and cpmm), real @replaceMethod clashes, unrelated archive overrides, missing requirements, stale overwrite copies and load order violations. If a finding is expected, accept it with cpmm doctor --ack <finding>.
The game crashes
Every cpmm run records the session: which mods, which versions, in what order.
cpmm crashes
This matches REDEngine crash reports to sessions, reads the faulting module from the minidump, and lists what changed since the last session that didn’t crash, with rollback suggestions.
cpmm errors
This compares error and warning lines from redscript, RED4ext, TweakXL, ArchiveXL, Codeware and Cyber Engine Tweaks logs with the previous launch, and shows what’s new and what’s gone.
An update broke something
cpmm keeps the previous versions of a mod when you update or reinstall it.
cpmm history <mod>
cpmm rollback <mod> [--to <timestamp>]
cpmm undo-update # revert the whole last update run
After a game patch
cpmm patch
cpmm notices a new game build and checks every native mod (DLLs and the script compiler) for releases since. To check the patched game on its own, cpmm vanilla on makes the next launch mod-free, once.
Saves
cpmm snapshots your saves before disabling, uninstalling, updating or rolling back mods. Snapshots use reflinks, so they take no extra space on filesystems that support them.
cpmm saves # list snapshots
cpmm saves --restore <name>
The doctor also warns when a recent save was made with a quest mod that’s now off.
Nexus links do nothing
- Check cpmm is the handler:
cpmm register-handler --check. - Steam’s built-in browser refuses
nxm://links. Use cpmm’s Browse Nexus, or Track pluscpmm tracked --install. See Steam Deck. - The handler logs to
~/.local/share/cpmm/nxm.log.
The Nexus browser crashes when a page plays media
WebKitGTK crashes if GStreamer has no autoaudiosink, which comes from the gst-plugins-good package and is missing on read-only SteamOS images. cpmm detects this and turns media off in the Nexus window. Set CPMM_NEXUS_MEDIA=0 or 1 to override.
Leaving cpmm
cpmm eject # dry run
cpmm eject --apply
The escape hatch: it copies every enabled mod back into the real game directory using reflinks, so you can play without cpmm.
